South Beach is one of the official sponsors for i Light Singapore 2023 and for the first time, the festival would be extending beyond the Marina Bay area into South Beach and other locations, from 1 – 25 Jun 2023.
Supporting our next generation, there would be two art installations by tertiary institutions displayed at South Beach.
Bleached
Prior to its development, South Beach was sea facing before the land reclamation programme. Resonating with South Beach history, visitors are invited to wander through an illuminated seascape adorned with ‘seaweed’ and ‘corals’, made from either seaweed bioplastics developed by the artists themselves, or upcycled from single-use plastics collected by JW Marriott Singapore South Beach. Upon sensing movement and contact, the ‘reefs’ turn white temporarily — alluding to the fate of marine ecosystems facing the threat of degradation of coral bleaching caused by global warming, providing a stark reminder of how our actions can impact the environment.
Show III
The second art installation, Show III is conceptualised by students from James Cook University and Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. Inspired by a belief that showers are the perfect settings for self-contemplation, Show III invites you to unwind outdoors by soaking in its calming blue light, with the company of a composed soundscape and virtual water droplets. The act of showering without water serves as a reminder for visitors to re-evaluate their water usage and at the same time, aims to provide an alternative environment where one can be free of worries in the bustle of the city.
Be part of a new wave of creativity and explore stunning light art installations across South Beach and other locations that are sure to make for amazing photos from 1 – 25 June 2023. Don’t miss out on this unforgettable experience!
